Louisiana Governor disputes NHTSA report on helmet laws
Louisiana Gov. Mike Foster called into question a report on motorcycle crashes released by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. The NHTSA report indicates that motorcycle crash fatalities have doubled since the Louisiana Legislature repealed the stateís mandatory helmet law.
Foster pointed out that the NHTSA looked merely at raw numbers and not at the circumstances of the crashes.
Foster said, You can make statistics say anything you want. The NHTSA wanted to hear that fatal crashes have doubled, and they looked for statistics that supported that. Itís true that the number of accidents has increased, but the report leaves a lot out of the picture, like the increasing number of motorcycle riders.
