NASCAR Toyota All-Star showdown update
A new Impact “Vapor” racing helmet autographed by all seventy NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown drivers and an Irwindale jacket autographed by Dale Earnhardt Junior were auctioned off last Saturday night for the benefit of the Red Cross Fire Relief Fund.
“We got a call from Bill Simpson a few weeks before the Toyota All-Star,” said communications director Doug Stokes. “He asked if we would like one of his new high-tech Impact “Vapor” helmets to use for in a drawing or for an auction. We said, ‘Sure!’ He sent it, and we had one of our volunteers take it around the pits on Friday, every driver signed it and we put it on silent auction on Saturday night. Some very lucky racing fans from Ukiah (northern California) put in the high bid ($1,501.00) and that special helmet is now proudly on display in their trophy cabinet!”
As for the “Junior” jacket. Dale Earnhardt Junior was at Irwindale Speedway the day after his spectacular Winston Cup win at Phoenix shooting a public service announcement for seat belt use. Track Vice President, Bob DeFazio took the opportunity to make a quick dash to Irwindale’s gift shop and grabbed a one of the track’s sleek black fleece/leather-sleeved jackets and a silver pen … He asked “Little E” to autograph the coat so that we could auction it off at the All-Star race.
Earnhardt, of course, said “Sure!” and the special jacket drew a winning bid of $600.00 bid from one of Irwindale regular fans who resides in nearby Temple City. (This fan really wanted that jacket bidding first $500 and then trumping his own bid by a hundred bucks just to assure that no one would out-bid him!).
Two thousand, one hundred and one very badly-needed dollars for the Red Cross, two very pleased, very generous fans and another win-win situation for motor racing! Both Simpson and Earnhardt have both told us: “Anytime!” to additional items for worthy causes next season at Irwindale, SO STAY TUNED!
